I have a question abt ammonia removal..
Do ammonia can be removed from water by oxidation process like Fe & Mn removal ? i read the principles of gas transfer, ammonia is one of contaminants that can be processed by gas transfer, so it means ammonia can be removed by oxydation (it’s my conclusion….plz make correction if i’m wrong). If my conclusion is right, ammonia can use another strong oxydator like KMnO4, Cl2, Oxygen (gained from gas transfer), etc.But in PDAM Balikpapan which their water contain NH3, water would be red if they try to oxydize their water by Cl2 (it’s my student said). I can’t find the answer, i thought…red is color of ammonia dispersion and will precipitate after that (but it’s my conclusion as well), maybe one of you has an experience how to treat NH3 with the cheapest, simplest & easiest way. I looking forward to get the answer. Thank you.

Dear Nyoman,
Are dealing with water supply or wastewater? How come you
have ammonia in your water supply! Treat that water as
wastewater if ammonia is there! Oh my God! If you put
chlorine intensionally in the water, you going to kill the
whole city population! Low ammonia content kills baby
easily! THM (tri-halo methane) is carcinogenic! It drives
you insane!

In wastewater, it is treated by stripping or
denitrification! Clear water is not clean water. Tap water
is not only clear and clean, but also is palatable and
free from organisms. That is why the BOD/COD content is
0.

Amonia yang ada dalam air kadarnya berapa?
Setahu saya warna merah bukanlah ciri dari amonia yang bereaksi dengan Cl2. Saya curiga ada yang lain, selain amonia dalam air tersebut, sehingga menyebabkan ketika bereaksi dengan Cl2 warnanya merah.
Dalam kadar tertentu konsentrasi Amonia tidak berbahaya, dan kadangkala malah ditambahkan dalam air, untuk mencegah bahaya pembentukan THM dari klorin bebas. Kloramine yang terbentuk merupakan desinfektan, walaupun tidak sekuat klorin.
Eh, sampeyan di Magelang mana? Boleh main ke sana gak? Saya di Jogja…..

Sorry, I wrote the answer in Indonesia language
Saya kurang tahu persis berapa kandungan NH3 yang ada dan berapa kapasitas
yang akan diproses, menurut saya jika kapasitas dan kandungan NH3 yang dihasilkan
besar kenapa tidak pakai extended aeration saja, tetapi jika kandungan NH3 kecil sementara
kenapa tidak memakai Dissolved Air Flotation saja, DAF bisa dipakai untuk kapasitas
besar dan kecil.
Berdasarkan pengalaman saya di Sangatta dan di Bontang air baku PDAM menggunakan air
sungai, dimana kandungan Fe dan warna cukup tinggi tapi juga ada kadar NH3-nya beberapa ppm.
Dengan DAF, bisa meremoval Fe sebesar 9 ppm dan warna sebesar 500 NTU. Sedangkan NH3
dapat diremoval beberapa persen.
